The best time to visit Maui is in February because it’s whale season and the tropical temperatures are a welcome change from the snowy weather on the mainland.

Maui Weather in February
First, the good news: it’s probably warmer in Maui than wherever you’re traveling from. The only state in the tropics is Hawaii, and while this doesn’t mean you won’t have seasons, there isn’t much of a difference between them.
The average high will be around 80°F, and the average low will be around 65°F. Not too shabby for the dead of winter!
Maui experiences the least amount of rainfall among all the islands. Although not as frequently as, say, Kauai, it does still rain here. There is, however, undoubtedly a season that is colder, wetter, and sunnier (winter) and one that is warmer, drier, and warmer (summer).

In Ka’anapali, the average high is 79; in Kihei, which is close to Wailea; and in Hana, the average high is 78. Ka’anapali, Kihei, and Hana all have lower average low temperatures than the state average of 64.

The month of February is a fantastic time to visit Maui for activities! Whale watching, a top-notch ocean activity, is one of the seasonal activities on Maui, and February is its busiest month!
Because of the whale migration, the Maui Nui Basin is a protected sanctuary for the whales from December 15 through April 15 of every year, putting a stop to pursuits like parasailing and jet skiing so that more boats can whale watch safely during the winter.
Whale Watching Tours in Maui
Every year, humpback whales travel from Alaska to Maui to breed and give birth. They migrate in what is known as a trickle, with some of them starting to come here in November or December and the last ones leaving in April or May.
February is the busiest month for whale watching in Maui because the majority of people will be there during that time. Every time you go whale watching in Maui, you have an equal chance of seeing a humpback whale because they cycle between periods of rest and activity all day long.
Whales can be seen singing alone, swimming in pairs with their mothers and calves, being escorted by a male, or in large groups in competitive pods where the males follow and vie for the attention of the female.
You might see surface actions such as sailing, spy hopping, slapping of the pecs and tails, and of course the traditional breach. We never get closer to whales than 100 yards away in Hawaii because they are protected animals.
They do tend to gravitate toward us frequently, and when they do, we pause our boats for their protection and hang out with them. This is called a “mugging” when the humpback whales come close to the boats!
Snorkeling Tours in Maui
Snorkeling on Maui is still a top activity, despite the cooler weather. Our waters are still in the 70s, and the air is usually between the mid- and high-eighties. Select boat-based snorkeling tours that can take you to Lanai or other parts of the Maui coast that were not affected by the rain if the water along the coastline has any run-off from rainfall.
The usual highlights of snorkel tours to Lanai are seeing the enormous sea cliff, snorkeling with tropical fish and turtles, and watching dolphins!

Zipline tours are fantastic in February! Maui would be even more lovely and lush with some additional rain! Some businesses, like Kapalua Ziplines, have dual ziplines, allowing you to zipline next to your special someone for a romantic tropical activity!
